We’ve all dealt with the upsell. A common sales tactic, it is designed to induce bigger purchases from a customer, whether in the form of more expensive items, add-ons or upgrades. Successfully carried out, an upsell results in increased profits for a seller.
Is Upselling Always Bad?
Upselling gets a bad rap because it “forces” a customer to buy more. However, it’s not always bad, given the products and services being highlighted actually serve a purpose for the customer.
For example, you have a wood shake roof and are having problems. A bad upsell in this case would be a replacement without considering repairs. A good one, however, will properly explain why a replacement is the more practical choice, especially when roofing damage is extensive, and multiple repairs over time will result in higher costs for you.
What You Can Do About It
Upsells work because they put pressure on customers, forcing their hand to make a purchase. Reduce that pressure, and you can take away some of the power that an upsell has. You can do that by:
-
Researching – Whatever product or service you need, whether you require roofing repairs or are looking for new siding, it always pays to do your research.
-
Asking questions – A contractor who believes they are offering you real value for money and not just looking for a quick buck will be willing to take the time to explain everything to you.
-
Saying no – If you don’t like it, you don’t have to get it – it’s as simple as that. It is your home, after all.
At Safe Harbor Exteriors, you come first. We don’t resort to hard sells and scare tactics, instead taking the time to understand your needs thoroughly so we can provide you with the right roofing and siding solutions.
