How to Prevent Roofing Damage From Trees

Trees are great for roofs in that they help in blocking the wind and providing protection against the sun. Unfortunately, they can also result in damage, with branches falling on roofs during storms, allowing animals access to your roof and encouraging mold and mildew growth.
So, how can you prevent roof damage without cutting down all your trees?
Trim trees – All tree branches hanging too close to your roof should be trimmed, ensuring they are not touching roofing material. If you estimate that more than 25% of a tree will have to be pruned, however, it’s best to consult an arborist first to determine the best course of action as extreme pruning can also hurt trees.
Start while they are young – If you have young trees, you can prevent untimely calls to roofers by controlling their growth. Help the tree only develop strong crotches (the point where the trunk meets the branch), which are less at risk of breaking off during a storm.
Remove unstable trees – Unstable trees or those that are seriously ill should be removed before they fall onto your roofing. However, check your local laws and with an arborist first as some species are protected, meaning they can’t be cut down. Some areas also don’t allow the cutting of trees with specific trunk diameters.

We talked to multiple companies while deciding who to use for the exterior of our home. Safe Harbor was transparent, fast, and offered James Hardie siding compared to all the other companies only offering vinyl. Safe Harbor was much more affordable than many of the other companies, who just wanted as much money as possible. We are extremely happy with our siding, soffit, fascia, flashing, gutters, windows and the guarantee that comes with their work. If there was any more work to be performed, without a doubt, we would chose safe Harbor again.
Safe Harbor installed James Hardie siding, soffits, and gutters. The install was meticulous and our home was left cleaner than when the company showed up. The level of detail in the install was beyond expectation! We are so pleased with the quality of the work and the professionalism of the install team!
